How to prepare to meet with CPS

On Behalf of | Feb 16, 2021 | Child Protective Services |

As a parent, you hoped never to have to meet with Child Protective Services. All you have ever wanted was to provide a safe, loving home for your children. But now something has led to that meeting, and you’re worried about losing your kids. How can you prepare for the meeting to best tell your side of the story and keep the family unit intact?

Consider their role

First off, remember that even false reports have to be investigated. Don’t take out any frustration on the CPS agents who come to talk to you. They may be on your side and agree that nothing is wrong. They still have an obligation to be there. They do not want to remove your children from the home any more than you want them to.

Present a positive environment

You want to show that the children are safe and happy in the home. First impressions matter. Little details matter. Make sure that the home is clean, that there are no clear safety hazards and that it’s clearly a welcoming place for children to live. The way the officials feel about your house when they walk in the door can impact how they see you.

Be prepared to answer a lot of questions

Many questions can get personal. Study potential questions in advance and think through your answers. This may feel like a test, but you can prepare for it.

Learn about your own rights

You have rights as a parent, no matter what happened. You may even be able to delay the meeting while you learn about your rights and the legal options at your disposal. You do not have to do this alone and the CPS agents are not the only ones in control of the meeting or the conversation.
